Substrate Mapping

AFFILIATED RESEARCHERS utilizes advanced hydrographic instruments and software to provide substrate characterization of lakes, harbors, rivers, canals, estuaries, and marine environments.

Substrate characterization and mapping is the preferred method to provide project engineers, resource managers, and scientists with a detailed understanding of the bottom make-up of the seafloor, lakebed, river, channel, or harbor. AFFILIATED RESEARCHERS substrate characterization services are valuable in enabling accurate assessments and quantification of specific critical habitat types.

AFFILIATED RESEARCHERS post-processes collected side-scan or multi-beam hydrographic data to develop a color-coded delineation mosaic of the various substrate types. This post-processing extracts the backscatter information from the side-scan or multi-beam data and digitally correlates the similar backscatter signatures throughout the surveyed area.

Technically advanced hydrographic software is used in the post-processing, to assign color-coding to similar signatures and develop a color-coded survey mosaic of the different substrate types.  AFFILIATED RESEARCHERS uses exceptionally high resolution side-scan and multi-beam equipment to collect precise hydrographic data.

Substrate characterization can effectively be used to enable quantifiable baseline assessments to document and monitor the health and condition of critical environments.  AFFILIATED RESEARCHERS substrate characterization services are also extremely beneficial in coastal zone management, invasive species studies, dredging and port construction, hydrographic routing applications, and more.

AFFILIATED RESEARCHERS often utilizes GPS-enabled underwater photogrammetry to provide scaled, accurate, and geo-referenced color images as a method of verification and visualization.

Accurate, interactive 3-D fly-through graphics of the substrate characterization mosaics are developed by AFFILIATED RESEARCHERS using QINSy Fledermaus software. A freeware viewing version of Fledermaus is provided to our clients to access, interact, and visualize the deliverables.

Our developed hydrographic products are readily exported into GeoTIFF, JPEG, PDF, CAD, or GIS formats to enable convenient data sharing.
